RTÉ Radio Centre, Broadcasting headquarters in Donnybrook, Dublin, Ireland
The RTÉ Radio Centre is a broadcasting facility in Donnybrook, Dublin, housing thirteen underground studios arranged around a central courtyard. Production offices occupy the upper floors, while skylights bring natural light into the subterranean corridors and work areas.
The building replaced former radio operations from Dublin's General Post Office and began broadcasting in 1973. This move marked a turning point for Irish radio, establishing a dedicated modern facility for production.
Studio 1 hosts live orchestral performances where visitors can watch from raised seating areas overlooking the musicians. This openness lets people experience radio as a living, interactive medium rather than just hearing it through speakers.
The underground location of studios provides natural sound isolation essential for quality recordings. Keep in mind that facilities are below ground level, so lighting relies on skylights during the day.
The structure was designed by architect Ronnie Tallon following modernist principles, featuring clean lines and functional aesthetics. The collaboration with Michael Scott & Partners resulted in a building that merges visual simplicity with practical needs.
