Ringsend Bridge

Ringsend Bridge, Stone bridge in Dublin, Ireland

Description

Ringsend Bridge is a stone bridge crossing the River Dodder in Dublin, featuring a single elliptical arch with robust walls on either side. The structure carries traffic across the waterway using a straightforward design built entirely from stone.

History

The current bridge was built between 1803 and 1812 to replace several earlier structures destroyed by floods. A particularly severe flood in 1802 prompted the construction of this more durable design.

Culture

The bridge received its initial name, Charlotte Bridge, in honor of Princess Charlotte, daughter of the Prince Regent during the early nineteenth century.

Practical

The bridge serves as part of a main road and accommodates both vehicle traffic and foot traffic crossing the river. It offers free public access and can be explored on foot from nearby roads and paths.

Did you know?

The bridge was originally named Charlotte Bridge in honor of Princess Charlotte, daughter of the Prince Regent, during the early 1800s. This historical name has largely faded from everyday use, though it reflects the royal connections of that era.
