Barmeath Castle, Medieval castle in Dunleer, Ireland
Barmeath Castle is a stone castle in County Louth, Ireland, set within a large park with views toward Dundalk Bay, the Cooley Peninsula, and the Mourne Mountains. The building combines medieval walls with Georgian-style interiors, and the grounds include water features, a stone bridge, and historic garden structures.
The castle was built in the 15th century as an outer fortification of the Pale, the area under English control in Ireland. The Bellew family took ownership in 1670 and carried out renovations that gave the building its Georgian-style interiors.
Barmeath Castle is one of the few Irish castles still lived in by the same family that has owned it for centuries. Visitors who come for events or celebrations find themselves in a place that feels like a private home rather than a monument.
The grounds are easy to walk through, with open parkland and clear paths leading to the main garden features. Visiting on a dry day makes it easier to explore the outer areas and take in the views from different points on the property.
The garden layout was designed by Thomas Wright, an 18th-century landscape designer known for his playful and unusual garden buildings. One of those structures on the grounds is decorated with shells, a small detail that most visitors walk past without noticing.
