Magdalen Tower

Magdalen Tower is a Gothic structure in Drogheda featuring a pointed arch base and several stories connected by an internal spiral staircase. The masonry shows the solid construction typical of medieval defensive buildings from this period.

The tower dates from the 14th century and was originally part of a Dominican friary founded in the early 13th century. It experienced major changes during the English conquest period and later during military conflicts that shaped medieval Drogheda.

The tower once served as a gathering place where important visitors and local figures met to conduct business and formal ceremonies. Its presence shaped how people moved through this part of Drogheda and where they chose to assemble for significant events.

The site can be visited as part of exploring Drogheda's medieval landmarks, alongside the surviving town walls and gates in the area. Walking through the streets around the tower helps you understand how the medieval town was laid out and defended.

The tower's battlements bear visible scars from cannon fire that struck during a siege in the 17th century. These bullet holes and damage marks serve as a physical record of the violence that took place around the medieval structures.
