Троил, Bronze cannon at Moscow Kremlin, Russia
Troil is a bronze cannon displayed at Moscow Kremlin measuring 4.35 meters long and weighing 7,000 kilograms with a 195-millimeter caliber. It stands mounted on a decorative gun carriage from 1835 that was added centuries after the weapon itself was made.
The cannon was cast in 1590 by master craftsman Andrei Chokhov as a siege weapon for campaigns during the reign of Tsar Fyodor Ivanovich. After seeing action in several military conflicts, it was brought to Moscow Kremlin in 1701 where it has remained on display.
The cannon bears the name of a Trojan figure and displays ornate decorations featuring a figure holding a sword and spear. Such embellishments were typical of grand weapons meant to display power and craftsmanship to those who saw them.
The cannon is located within the Kremlin grounds and can be freely viewed from outside. Since it stands in a public area, you can visit it at any time without needing special arrangements.
Though the cannon likely never fired in actual combat, it participated in several major sieges including the defense of Pskov in 1615 and the conquest of Smolensk in 1654. Its value lay more in the show of strength than in practical firepower.
