Rocher de Carlat, Historical viewpoint in Carlat, France

The Rocher de Carlat stands on a basalt plateau offering views from the Monts du Cantal mountains to the borders of Aveyron.

First mentioned in 839 during Louis the Pious's reign, this former fortress site served as a residence for Jacques d'Armagnac until its demolition in 1604.

The archaeological research program at Rocher de Carlat reveals medieval military architecture and the daily life of fortress inhabitants through centuries.

The site opens from July to August, Wednesday through Sunday, with guided tours at 14:30 and 16:30 requiring advance reservations.

Virtual reality technology allows visitors to experience the 15th-century fortress through digital reconstructions displayed on tablets and augmented reality headsets.
