Pic de Montalet is a mountain peak near Lacaune that rises to about 1260 meters. The summit is reached by a hiking path that winds through forests and open areas covered with beech trees, broom, and blueberry vegetation.
In 1792, astronomers Delambre and Méchain used this peak as a measurement point while surveying the distance between Dunkirk and Barcelona. This scientific work contributed to early mapping efforts of the region and country.
A statue of the Virgin Mary has stood at the summit since 1882, drawing visitors from across the region to this spiritual place. The figure marks a moment of reverence along the hiking path and connects this peak to local religious traditions.
The hiking trail begins at Place Général de Gaulle in Lacaune and covers about 19 kilometers to reach the summit. The route is well-marked and typically takes five to six hours to complete the full loop walk.
The vegetation around the summit changes with elevation, creating different landscapes from forest to open heath. In the exposed areas, rare plants like gentian grow between rock formations, giving the landscape a distinctive character that changes through the seasons.
