Berkut Platform, Oil extraction platform in Sea of Okhotsk, Russia.
Berkut is an oil extraction platform in the Sea of Okhotsk near Sakhalin Island used to draw crude oil from the Arkutun-Dagi field. The structure consists of steel construction anchored to the seafloor and houses the drilling and processing equipment needed for operations.
The platform resulted from international collaboration among oil companies from Russia, Japan, India, and the United States, beginning operations in the 2000s. The location near Sakhalin Island was chosen to access major oil reserves in the region.
The name means Golden Eagle in Russian and reflects the power of this engineering achievement. From a distance, people regard this structure as a symbol of industrial capability in the Pacific waters.
The platform sits several kilometers offshore and is normally accessible only by specialized ships or helicopters. Visitors should expect that rough conditions and remote waters make reaching it challenging.
The structure is engineered to withstand extreme weather and can handle sub-freezing temperatures and very high waves. This design enables uninterrupted operations even in the harshest subarctic conditions of the region.
