Fort Hamilton, British military fort in Hamilton, Bermuda
Fort Hamilton is a military fortification built on a hilltop at the eastern edge of Hamilton, offering sweeping views of the harbor and surrounding neighborhoods. The structure includes gun emplacements and underground passages designed for coastal defense.
The British built this fort in 1888 as part of their defense strategy in the western Atlantic. Despite its military purpose, the fortification never saw combat or served its intended defensive role.
The Bermuda Pipe Band performs traditional Scottish ceremonies with Highland dancers each Monday from November through March within the fort grounds.
The fort sits within easy walking distance of downtown Hamilton and is positioned on elevated terrain. The pathways are paved throughout, though some sections slope steeply and require moderate physical effort to navigate.
The fort's dry moat was transformed into botanical gardens during the 1960s and now holds exotic plants, bamboo groves, and palm trees. This green space within the stone walls creates an unexpected contrast to the austere military structure.
