Crystal Cave, Underground cave system in Hamilton Parish, Bermuda.
Crystal Cave is an underground cave system in Hamilton Parish featuring white limestone formations and several pools of clear water. A suspended bridge connects different sections of the cave across an underground lake, situated at a depth of approximately 32 meters.
Two young cricketers, Carl Gibbons and Edgar Hollis, discovered the cave in 1907 after noticing warm air coming from a hole in the ground. The discovery led to the cave's opening as a tourist attraction after a notable visitor came in 1908 to explore it.
The name comes from the sparkling limestone formations that reflect light throughout the cave's interior. Visitors walk through chambers where these natural structures create patterns of shadows and brightness as they explore.
The cave maintains a steady temperature of around 22 degrees Celsius throughout the year. Visitors should wear rubber-soled shoes for safe footing on the wet surfaces and bridges inside.
The cave inspired the creation of an underground world setting for a television series that gained a devoted following. This creative connection shows how natural locations spark artistic imagination in unexpected ways.
