La Mantilla, Mixed-use residential complex in Montpellier, France
La Mantilla is a mixed-use residential complex in Montpellier featuring white mineral facades with lattice patterns around balconies and residential units. The development integrates shops, restaurants, housing units, student residences, offices, and a public car park into one cohesive structure.
The architectural design won a competition in 2009, with construction beginning in the Port Marianne district in 2015. This project marked a shift toward contemporary urban development in the neighborhood.
Three grand staircases connect to a first-floor hanging garden that serves as a central gathering space for residents and visitors. This area blends Mediterranean design traditions with contemporary residential living.
The complex is within walking distance of various city amenities and offers easily accessible entrances to shops and restaurants. Visitors can freely explore public areas such as the hanging garden and find adequate parking throughout the site.
The complex faces Jacques Coeur Lake on its northern side, with numerous openings creating shifting light patterns throughout the day. These windows and passages produce changing shadows and brightness effects that constantly reshape how the architecture appears.
