Cabane Tchanquée n°53, Wooden cabin on stilts in Arcachon Bay, France
The Cabane Tchanquée n°53 rises above the waters of Arcachon Bay on tall wooden stilts, painted white with matching shutters against the coastal backdrop.
Built in 1948 by deputy mayor Monsieur Longau, this elevated structure replaced an original cabin from 1883 that collapsed during a severe storm in 1943.
The cabin represents traditional oyster farming practices in Arcachon Bay, where elevated structures allowed farmers to monitor their oyster beds throughout changing tides.
Visitors can reach the cabin through boat excursions departing from the Port of Arcachon or Port of Le Moulleau, with trips scheduled according to tide times.
The structure stands as one of only two remaining elevated cabins among fifty-three wooden structures on the Île aux Oiseaux, marking the center of Arcachon Bay.
