European Investment Bank, International financial institution in Kirchberg, Luxembourg
The European Investment Bank is an international financial institution in Kirchberg and occupies two large glass and steel building complexes there. Both structures stand directly next to each other and together form the administrative headquarters with office floors, conference rooms and technical facilities.
The institution was founded in 1958 through the Treaties of Rome to finance development projects in the original six founding states. The current building complex was constructed from 1998 onwards and expanded in 2008 with the second section.
The building shows floor-to-ceiling glass walls and open work levels that reflect the idea of collaboration among member countries. Staff from across Europe use the multilingual meeting rooms and shared workspaces every day.
The site is located in the European quarter of Kirchberg and is easily reached via main roads and public transport. Visits are only possible by prior arrangement as these are administrative buildings with security checks.
The entrance hall holds a large-scale artwork made of colored glass panels that reflects daylight and creates different light moods depending on the time of day. The installation was designed specifically for this space and often surprises visitors as their first impression.
