Pfaffenthal–Kirchberg funicular, Public transit funicular in Pfaffenthal district, Luxembourg
The Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg funicular links the railway station with the Kirchberg district by means of two parallel tracks with passing loops and balanced counterweight cars. Each cabin holds approximately 170 passengers and covers the 200-meter route while bridging a significant rise between different city levels.
Construction of this transportation link started in early 2015 and concluded with its official opening on December 10, 2017. The project was created to better connect the steep elevation differences between the lower and upper parts of the city.
The funicular operates as a free public transit system, reflecting the city's approach to open mobility for all residents and visitors. People use it daily to move between different elevation levels without barriers to access.
The system operates at regular intervals, allowing passengers to overcome the steep slope without effort, which is especially helpful for people with mobility challenges or heavy luggage. Access is straightforward and the ride takes only a few minutes from the station to the upper level.
The slope reaches about 20 percent, enabling quick access to the upper districts without relying on the traditional stairways found throughout the older parts of the city. This solution combines efficiency with a modern response to Luxembourg's geographic challenges.
