Mudam, Art museum in Kirchberg, Luxembourg.
Mudam, also known as the Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, is a contemporary art museum in the Kirchberg district of Luxembourg City. The building combines a historic yellow-stone facade with modern glass structures across several floors of gallery space.
The museum opened in 2006 on the site of the former Fort Thüngen, which was once part of Luxembourg's military fortifications. American architect I.M. Pei designed the building and integrated the surviving historic walls into the new structure.
Mudam takes its name from Grand Duke Jean and shows contemporary art from around the world. Many exhibitions are created specifically for this building, meaning artists develop their works directly for its spaces rather than adapting existing shows.
The museum is in the Kirchberg district, well served by bus and tram, with parking available nearby. It is worth checking which exhibitions are currently on before your visit, as not all spaces may be open at the same time.
In the adjacent Park Dräi Eechelen, artist Agnes Denes created a work that contains a time capsule with a message for future generations. This shows how the museum reaches beyond its own walls into the landscape around the building.
