Verbier, Village and ski resort in Val de Bagnes, Switzerland
Verbier is a village and ski resort on a sunny plateau in the Val de Bagnes, in the Swiss Alps. It sits at about 1,400 feet (1,400 m) above the valley floor and forms part of the 4 Vallées ski area, one of the largest networks of slopes in Switzerland.
Verbier was long a small farming and herding community in the Val de Bagnes, with roots going back to at least the medieval period. From the 1920s onward, the village shifted toward winter tourism, opening its first ski school in 1933 and expanding its lifts through the mid-20th century until the ski area reached the summit of Mont Fort at 3,300 m.
Verbier is reached by a scenic mountain road or by bus from nearby towns in the valley below. Once there, walking or using local transport is the easiest way to get around, as the streets are narrow and parking can be limited.
Every summer since 1994, Verbier has hosted a classical music festival that draws leading performers from across the world to this mountain village. For a few weeks each July and August, concert halls and outdoor stages fill with music in the middle of the Alps.
