Nideggen Castle

Nideggen Castle is a medieval fortress in Nideggen that now houses a museum with eight exhibition rooms inside its tower. The collection displays everyday objects from medieval times, weapons, and scale models of castles from the surrounding region.

The fortress was founded in 1177 under Count William II and served as a strategic defense against the territorial claims of the Cologne archbishops. It played a key role in the regional power struggles of that era.

The place offers insight into medieval power structures and how fortifications shaped daily life for those who lived there. The displayed objects tell stories of craftsmanship, trade, and social differences that defined the region at that time.

The museum is easy to access and the exhibition spreads across multiple levels that visitors can explore on foot. Comfortable shoes are recommended since there are stairs and changes in floor level throughout.

The castle cellar still contains the remains of a dungeon where two Cologne archbishops were held captive during medieval territorial wars. This makes the fortress a direct witness to the power struggles that defined the region.
