Karaván
Karaván is a food court on Kazinczy utca in Budapest's VII. kerület, right next to the Szimpla bar, made up of food trucks and small booths. Each vendor serves a different type of food, from Hungarian classics to cheese dishes, burgers, vegan plates, Italian and Mexican options.
Karaván grew out of the ruin bar scene that took hold in Budapest's VII. kerület in the 2000s, when empty courtyards and neglected buildings began to host bars and creative spaces. Its location next to Szimpla, one of the first places in the area to attract this kind of crowd, helped it become a go-to street food stop.
The space is open during the day but gets much busier in the evenings, especially on weekends when the surrounding streets fill up with people. Benches at the back offer a place to sit, though many visitors eat standing near the trucks.
Karaván occasionally hosts local artists who display work on the site, making it something more than a place to eat. This connection between food vendors and creative work reflects how the surrounding neighborhood has long mixed everyday life with artistic expression.
