Reserva Ecológica Nanciyaga
Reserva Ecológica Nanciyaga is a nature facility near Catemaco with forest trails, a lake, and wetland areas where visitors can stay in cabins and explore the surroundings. The site offers boat rides, mud treatments, hiking paths, and opportunities to observe birds, monkeys, and other wildlife in their natural habitat.
The site was originally a ranch with sparse vegetation until a veterinarian purchased it in 1980 and began restoring the forest. The reserve was officially established in 1995 to protect natural resources, and since 2014, scarlet macaws have been reintroduced into the area.
At Nanciyaga, local traditions continue through spiritual practices and rituals performed by a resident shaman. Visitors can participate in cleansing ceremonies using medicinal plants and copal, as well as the temazcal, a traditional steam bath for physical and spiritual renewal.
Wear comfortable shoes, bring sunscreen and insect repellent, as early mornings are best for spotting animals and enjoying cooler weather. Local guides offer tours that point out plants and wildlife, helping you make the most of your time exploring the trails.
The reserve is known for wellness treatments using mineral waters and herbs rooted in local traditions, attracting visitors seeking natural healing and relaxation. These holistic approaches leverage the site's natural resources for body and mind renewal.
