Zur Alten Kaisermühle, Waterfront restaurant in Donaustadt, Austria
Zur Alten Kaisermühle is a waterfront restaurant in Vienna's Donaustadt district, sitting directly on the Alte Donau. It has three garden terraces that step down toward the water, where Mediterranean dishes and open-fire grills are served.
A mill known as the Kaisermühle once operated on this stretch of the Danube, part of a row of working mills that lined the river for centuries. The mill eventually disappeared, and a restaurant took its place while keeping the old name alive.
The name "Zur Alten Kaisermühle" recalls a mill that once stood on this spot along the water. Guests eat outside on tiered wooden terraces that face the Alte Donau, with the smell of open-fire grilling in the air.
The restaurant is most popular in summer, when all three terraces are open and tables fill up fast. A reservation is a good idea for weekend evenings, especially if you want a spot close to the water.
The restaurant has its own private landing stage, so guests can arrive by boat and tie up right next to their table. This makes it one of the very few dining spots in Vienna that you can reach directly from the water.
