Czech Museum of Cubism, Cubist art museum in Old Town, Czech Republic
The Czech Museum of Cubism is housed in the House of the Black Madonna and displays Cubist works across painting, furniture, and architectural design on multiple floors. The collection shows how this movement extended into everyday objects and building design, not just canvas-based art.
The building was designed in 1911 by Josef Gočár as a department store that embodied Cubist principles in its structure. It later transformed into a museum dedicated to preserving and presenting the movement's most important works and designs.
Czech artists pushed Cubism into furniture and architecture, creating sharp angular forms that went beyond painting. Visitors can see how this style shaped everyday objects and the spaces people lived in during that era.
The museum is located near Old Town Square and is easy to reach on foot, though access involves stairs throughout the building. Plan to spend at least one to two hours exploring the different exhibition levels and getting a full sense of the collection.
Inside the museum sits the Grand Café Orient, which retains its original 1912 Cubist interior with geometric patterns woven into furniture and walls. This working cafe lets visitors experience the Cubist aesthetic while having a coffee or snack, making the movement feel lived rather than distant.
