Benaki Museum - Pireos, Contemporary art museum in Athens, Greece
The Benaki Museum Pireos is a contemporary art museum occupying 8,200 square meters of industrial building space with glass-fronted ramps, brick walls, and a central atrium. It contains exhibition halls, an amphitheater seating 300 people, a bookshop, and a restaurant opening to the courtyard.
The building originally functioned as an automobile dealership before transforming into a museum in 2004. Architects Maria Kokkinou and Andreas Kourkoulas designed the conversion, reshaping the industrial space for cultural use.
The museum presents rotating exhibitions of contemporary art, architecture, and design while maintaining a significant modern Greek design shop. Visitors experience current artistic directions and local creative traditions through the displayed works.
The museum is accessible via open staircases and ramps that let you explore different levels at your own pace. The on-site restaurant and shop provide convenient breaks during your visit.
The museum has hosted interactive art experiences, including performances where visitors engaged in unconventional activities like counting rice grains or participating in silent exchanges. These installations challenge conventional ways of experiencing art.
