Lyndhurst, Gothic Revival mansion in Tarrytown, United States

Description

Lyndhurst is a limestone manor with Gothic arched windows, vaulted ceilings, and a four-story tower in Tarrytown, United States. The covered carriage entrance added in 1865 leads into narrow corridors lined with tall windows.

History

Alexander Jackson Davis designed the estate in 1838 for William Paulding Jr., who was mayor of New York City. Railroad tycoon Jay Gould purchased it in 1880 and expanded the property for his family.

Culture

The estate takes its name from a linden tree that once grew in its garden, while rooms still display furniture and artwork from the late 19th century. Visitors can see how wealthy families lived and shaped their country retreats along the Hudson during that era.

Practical

The 27-hectare (67-acre) grounds include manicured gardens with a greenhouse and views over the Hudson River. Guided tours show interior rooms, while events vary by season.

Did you know?

The television series Dark Shadows filmed several scenes at the property. The 19th-century greenhouse was among the largest private structures of its kind in the region.
