Lyndhurst Mansion, Gothic Revival mansion museum in Tarrytown, United States.
Lyndhurst Mansion is a large limestone residence with pointed arch windows and tall vaulted ceilings spread across multiple floors. The house looks out toward the Hudson River and contains numerous rooms furnished in period style.
Architect Alexander Jackson Davis designed the house in 1838 for New York City mayor William Paulding Jr. Decades later, railroad magnate Jay Gould acquired the estate and transformed it into a symbol of his wealth and status.
The mansion displays furnishings and artwork that show how wealthy Americans lived between 1838 and 1961. The rooms give a sense of how upper-class homes changed over time.
The house is seen only through guided tours in English that require advance booking online. It operates seasonally from April through December, so plan your visit accordingly for a complete experience.
A separate bowling alley building from 1894 still stands on the grounds, showing what entertainment wealthy families enjoyed. Three raised platforms on the property offer different vantage points to view the river.
