Botero Museum, Art museum in La Candelaria, Colombia.
The Botero Museum is an art museum in La Candelaria, Bogotá, with more than 120 paintings and sculptures by Fernando Botero, including portrayals of people, animals, and everyday scenes in enlarged forms. The collection also shows works by Renoir, Dalí, and Chagall from Botero's private collection.
Fernando Botero handed the collection to the Banco de la República in 2000, which renovated the building and opened the museum. The donation included more than 200 artworks from his own output and from other artists he acquired over his lifetime.
The museum sits in a colonial house called Casa de Moneda, where the republic once minted its currency. Visitors today walk through rooms with high ceilings and inner courtyards where Botero's works hang alongside European masters.
The museum charges no admission and sits within walking distance of other historical buildings and museums in the area. The rooms are spread across stairs and inner courtyards, so visitors with limited mobility should plan accordingly.
Some of the paintings come from the years when Botero lived in Paris and New York before returning to Colombia. The color palette and themes in these works reflect the cities where they were made.
