Teatro Colón

Teatro Colón is an opera house in La Candelaria featuring Republican architecture and an Italian-style horseshoe-shaped auditorium. Ornate corridors and decorated spaces throughout the building display artworks that enhance its refined character.

Italian architect Pietro Cantini designed the building, which opened on October 12, 1892, to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus's voyage to the Americas. Its completion reflected efforts to establish Bogotá as a major cultural center in South America.

The theater has long served as a hub for performing arts and continues to host opera, ballet, and orchestral performances that draw audiences from across the city. It remains a place where people gather to experience music and drama at a high level.

The venue is located in the historic La Candelaria district and is best accessed on foot, with multiple entrances available for visitors. It is advisable to arrive during regular hours and check in advance about any performances or events that might affect access to the building.

The stage features a special curtain commissioned directly by President Rafael Núñez from Italian painter Annibale Gatti and created specifically for this building. This work represents a rare example of a head of state personally investing in a custom artistic piece for a cultural venue.
