El Globo, Historic restaurant in Monserrat, Buenos Aires, Argentina
El Globo is a restaurant in the Monserrat neighborhood of Buenos Aires, set inside a 19th-century building on Hipólito Yrigoyen street. The interior features traditional wooden furnishings and the menu focuses on Argentine and Spanish dishes.
The building was originally the home of the Sánchez de Bustamante family, who left during the yellow fever outbreak of 1871 that swept through Buenos Aires. It was later converted into a restaurant and has been running ever since.
El Globo serves traditional Argentine and Spanish food, including puchero, a meat and vegetable stew that arrives on two separate plates following an old local dining custom. This way of serving is rarely seen in newer restaurants and gives the meal a distinct, old-fashioned character.
The restaurant sits in central Buenos Aires and is easy to reach on foot from many points in the Monserrat area. Paid parking is available nearby, and the restaurant offers vouchers for use at surrounding parking facilities.
The restaurant takes its name from Jorge Newbery, an Argentine aviation pioneer who crossed the Río de la Plata by hot air balloon. That flight is remembered as one of the early milestones in Argentine aviation history.
