Drachenfels, German restaurant at Drachenfels mountain, Königswinter, Germany
Drachenfels is a glass-walled restaurant sitting at the top of the Drachenfels mountain in Königswinter, right along the Rhine. Large windows frame the view over the Rhine Valley and the rolling hills of the Siebengebirge on all sides.
The Drachenfels mountain became one of Germany's first tourist destinations, and a cog railway has been carrying visitors to the top since 1883. The restaurant grew out of that early hospitality tradition and has been part of the summit ever since.
The Drachenfels takes its name from an old dragon legend tied to the Siebengebirge hills, and that story still shapes how locals and visitors relate to the place. Sitting at the top, you are surrounded by a landscape that has drawn travelers, poets, and painters for centuries.
The easiest way to reach the restaurant is by the cog railway, which stops close to the entrance, though a footpath also leads to the top. The building is wheelchair accessible and credit cards are accepted.
The ruins of the medieval Drachenfels castle stand just a few steps from the restaurant on the same summit and are freely accessible. Many visitors only notice them on the way out, realizing they were sitting next to one of the oldest castle ruins along the Rhine.
