Hotel Indonesia Kempinski
Hotel Indonesia Kempinski is a large hotel in the Menteng district of Jakarta, standing directly at the Bundaran HI roundabout at the heart of the city. The property includes an older tower and a newer section known as the Kempinski Residences, with guest rooms, restaurants, bars, and meeting facilities across both buildings.
Hotel Indonesia opened in 1962 as the country's first international hotel, a project initiated under President Sukarno as part of the preparations for the Asian Games held in Jakarta. Decades later the Kempinski group took over management, and the building was extensively renovated while the original tower was kept.
The hotel sits directly beside Bundaran HI, the large roundabout linked to Jakarta's Welcome Monument. The area in front of it becomes a gathering spot on car-free Sundays, when people walk or cycle around the roundabout in what is a weekly city ritual.
The hotel sits directly next to the Bundaran HI MRT station, making arrival from many parts of Jakarta straightforward. The roundabout itself serves as a useful starting point for walking to nearby shopping centers and office areas.
When it opened, Hotel Indonesia was the first building in Jakarta to have air conditioning, a notable feature in the city's tropical climate at the time. The original tower was designed by an Indonesian architecture team, and it is considered an example of the national style of the early independence era.
