A Escola
A Escola is a restaurant building in Comporta originally constructed as a schoolhouse in the 1950s. The structure features simple architecture with wooden fixtures and original elements like chalkboards and furnishings that reflect its former purpose.
The building was constructed in the 1950s during the Estado Novo period to house children of rice field workers from nearby villages. After the school closed, Henrique Galvao opened the restaurant in 1996 and transformed the space into a venue for traditional Portuguese cooking.
The place takes its name from its past as a school for children of rice harvest workers. This history remains visible in the walls and creates a special setting where visitors can experience and understand how traditional recipes connect generations through shared meals.
The restaurant is located in Cachopos, a quiet village between Alcacer do Sal and the coast, with parking available nearby. It is advisable to reserve in advance, especially on weekends and during peak season, as the spot is popular.
The house wine collection is exceptional with over 300 bottles, including rare moscatel wines from nearby wineries. Head chef Octaviano recommends asking about special wines that may not be on the list, as the collection continuously grows and new discoveries are available to guests.
