Praia do Carvalhal, Atlantic sand beach in Carvalhal, Portugal
Praia do Carvalhal is a sandy Atlantic beach in the village of Carvalhal, in western Portugal, backed by natural dunes that run along the entire shore. Wooden walkways cross the dunes and connect the parking areas directly to the shoreline.
The land around this beach was long shaped by rice farming in the nearby fields, a practice that took hold from the mid-20th century onward and defined the look of the surrounding countryside. The beach itself grew as a local destination while this agricultural setting remained unchanged around it.
Local fishermen still launch their boats directly from the sand in the early morning, and this daily routine gives the beach a working character that sets it apart from most seaside spots. Visitors who arrive early can watch this activity up close.
In summer, the beach has supervised swimming areas and separate zones for water sports, so it helps to check the flag system before entering the water. The wooden walkways make it easy to cross the dunes, and the path is accessible for people with limited mobility.
Two natural lagoons, Lagoa Formosa and Lagoa Travessa, sit right next to the beach and serve as nesting areas for several bird species. Walking along the edge between the beach and the lagoons, it is easy to spot birds moving between the two.
