The grounds hold several buildings of different construction phases, arranged on an irregular layout that reflects centuries of additions and changes.
Construction began in the early 1500s under Mikolaj Firlej, and the fortress stayed in his family for over a century before passing to other owners. Over time the building fell into decline and was eventually left as a ruin, which is largely how it stands today.
The castle grounds function today as an open-air museum where old wooden buildings from the region have been brought together in one place. Walking through the site gives a sense of how rural life in this part of Poland looked over past centuries.
Entry to the grounds is through the main gate, after which visitors can walk freely around the different parts of the complex. The site covers a fair amount of ground, so comfortable shoes and enough time to see both the ruins and the relocated buildings are a good idea.
Among the buildings moved onto the grounds is an 18th-century manor house and a wooden granary from the 19th century, both brought from other locations in the region. This means visitors can see everyday rural objects and building styles from very different periods all within the same visit.
