Heroes Monument

The Heroes Monument is an obelisk in Surabaya, Indonesia, rising over 41 meters into the sky and resembling an upside-down nail. Its surface shows curved sections that give it a distinctive form, while the structure stands on an open plaza.

The obelisk arose after a military conflict in 1945, when the city became the scene of heavy fighting between Indonesian freedom fighters and foreign troops. This confrontation is regarded as a turning point in the Indonesian independence movement.

The obelisk bears the name Tugu Pahlawan and marks an important remembrance site for the city. On national holidays, locals gather here for memorial ceremonies and military parades.

An underground museum below the structure displays photographs, weapons, and objects from 1945 and is accessible to visitors. The surrounding area offers wide walkways and shaded trees that are especially welcome in hot weather.

The architecture of the structure uses eleven segments and ten arches to represent the date 10-11-1945. Each element thus carries a symbolic meaning that goes beyond its purely structural function.
