KRI Pasopati, warship
KRI Pasopati is a Whiskey-class submarine originally built in Vladivostok and later transferred to the Indonesian Navy. The vessel measures about 250 feet (76 meters) in length and now rests on land beside a shopping center in Surabaya.
The submarine was launched in 1955 as S-290 by the Soviet Navy and sold to Indonesia in 1962. It took part in Operation Trikora, transporting troops and supplies to West Irian, before being decommissioned in 1994.
The name Pasopati comes from Javanese mythology and refers to a magic weapon of the hero Arjuna. Visitors today see the gray metal hull and hatches of a real warship that once patrolled silently beneath the waves.
Entry is through a ladder and narrow hatches, so visitors should be prepared for tight spaces. The museum grounds include parking, small snack stands, and a play area for children.
After being decommissioned, the submarine was disassembled, transported through the city, and reassembled beside a shopping center. Visitors can walk through the original torpedo tubes and engine rooms that still show traces of decades of use.
