Flogufoss, Cascading waterfall in Breiddalur Valley, Eastern Iceland.
Flogufoss is a waterfall in Breiddalur Valley in Eastern Iceland that drops about 60 meters from the cliffs. The water forms a powerful stream below a natural stone arch formation at the top, flowing over dark basalt rock.
The water course changed direction around two decades ago when it began flowing through the stone arch formation at the top. This shift reshaped how the waterfall appears today.
The name Flogufoss combines Icelandic words Flögu, referring to the river, and foss, the Nordic term for waterfall used throughout Iceland. This naming reflects how water and landscape are deeply connected in regional identity.
To reach the waterfall, take Road 1 and then Road 966, followed by about a 15-minute walk from the marked parking area. The site is relatively easy to access and requires no special equipment or prior experience.
A smaller cascade spills onto a natural terrace near the top, creating multiple levels of water flow. This stepped structure gives the falls a distinctive, layered appearance that shifts with changing water conditions.
