Eastern Region

The Eastern Region spreads across deep fjords, mountains, and valleys along Iceland's eastern coast. The area includes multiple coastal towns and inland valleys with varying landscapes.

Djúpivogur received its trading license in 1589, marking the establishment of the first official settlement in the region. This early trading activity shaped the coastal development for centuries to follow.

The town of Seyðisfjörður keeps many original wooden buildings from early settlement times and hosts regular art exhibitions in its cultural center.

The region is best reached via Egilsstaðir Airport, which offers connections throughout the country. A weekly ferry service from Seyðisfjörður connects to mainland Europe.

The Kárahnjúkar Hydropower Plant taps glacial river systems to generate electricity and ranks among the country's largest energy projects. The facility primarily powers industrial operations with renewable energy.
