Mount Bonnell

Mount Bonnell is a limestone hilltop in Austin that rises about 781 feet above sea level. From the observation platform at the top, you can see downtown, the lake, and the surrounding rolling landscape.

The hilltop was named after George Bonnell, who was appointed as Commissioner of Indian Affairs by the Texas Republic. This appointment led to the elevation being given his name.

The limestone formation serves as a central gathering point for Austin residents who come together for outdoor activities and social events.

You reach the observation platform by climbing 102 stone steps that are regularly maintained and straightforward to navigate. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when the sun is lower and the light is clearer.

In the early 1900s, a woman named Hazel Keyes performed a daring cable slide down from the summit as a public spectacle. This unusual stunt was noted in local records and reflects the adventurous spirit of that time.
