Mayfield-Gutsch Estate
Mayfield-Gutsch Estate, Historic estate and nature preserve in west Austin, United States.
The Mayfield-Gutsch Estate is a historic property and nature preserve covering 23 acres in west Austin with a historic cottage, botanical gardens, ponds with water lilies, and multiple walking trails. Stone walls divide the grounds into different sections, creating distinct spaces to explore.
The cottage was built in the 1870s and purchased in 1909 by Texas Secretary of State Allison Mayfield. The property was later expanded and developed under Milton Gutsch's ownership, shaping much of what visitors see today.
The gardens were shaped by gardener Esteban Arredondo, who designed the landscape within the stone-walled boundaries. Visitors can still see his influence in how plants and water features are arranged throughout the property.
The estate is open daily with ample parking and restroom facilities on site. Wearing comfortable shoes is important since the walking trails traverse different areas and include uneven terrain.
More than two dozen peacocks roam freely across the grounds, displaying their colorful feathers at the water features and lotus gardens. These birds are an unexpected sight that adds a memorable element to a visit.
