Covert Park at Mount Bonnell

The 775-foot summit at Covert Park features stone steps leading to viewing platforms overlooking Lake Austin and the Colorado River below.

Mount Bonnell, named after George Bonnell in 1830, served as a military observation point during conflicts between settlers and Native Americans.

The limestone cliff summit has become a traditional location for Austin residents to bring visitors and celebrate special occasions throughout the year.

The park entrance provides free parking spaces, and visitors need to climb 106 stone steps to reach the main observation deck.

In 1898, performer Hazel Keyes created a sensation by sliding down a cable from the summit to the opposite bank of Lake Austin.
