Covert Park at Mount Bonnell, Public park in Austin, United States

Covert Park at Mount Bonnell is a hilltop park offering views of Lake Austin and the Colorado River below. Stone steps climb to observation decks where visitors can see the water and surrounding landscape spread out in front of them.

The location was named Mount Bonnell in 1830 after George Bonnell, an early Austin figure. During conflicts between settlers and Native Americans, the summit served as a military observation point.

The summit has become a place where residents bring visitors and mark celebrations, giving it personal meaning in the daily rhythm of the city. Locals use the viewpoint for gatherings and special moments with friends and family.

Parking at the entrance is free and the path is easy to access for most visitors. The stone steps can become slippery when wet, so wearing good shoes is helpful for the climb.

In 1898, performer Hazel Keyes created a memorable moment by riding a cable from the summit down to the opposite shore of Lake Austin. This daring stunt became a notable event in the area's history.
