Mayfield Park and Nature Preserve, Public park and nature preserve in Austin, United States
Mayfield Park and Nature Preserve is a 23-acre nature preserve in Austin featuring multiple ponds filled with koi, colorful garden plantings, and hiking trails through natural woodland. The site blends formal garden design with native forest areas, creating diverse spaces for plants and animals.
The site started as a limestone cottage in the 1870s and was transformed by the Mayfield family into formal gardens with ponds and stone paths in the 1920s. This redesign established the framework for the gardens and water features visitors see today.
The grounds host native bird species during migration seasons and provide space to observe the plant life that belongs to Texas. The free-roaming peacocks are a living part of the place, appearing in the gardens throughout the year.
The grounds are open daily from 5 AM to 10 PM with parking available near the main entrance on West 35th Street. Wear sturdy footwear and bring water, as the trails have uneven surfaces and limited shade.
The grounds are home to free-roaming peacocks that nest in trees and display their feathers throughout the year in the formal garden areas. These birds are not fenced or tamed and behave as wild animals within the park.
