Austin Zoo, Animal rescue center and zoo in Austin, Texas.
Austin Zoo is a non-profit animal sanctuary that provides refuge for rescued and displaced wildlife from various backgrounds. The grounds feature hundreds of animals living in spacious, naturalistic habitats designed for their wellbeing.
The facility began in 1990 as Good Day Ranch, initially focused on helping injured and orphaned animals. Over time, this small private rescue operation evolved into a larger non-profit institution serving the broader community.
The zoo focuses on teaching visitors about wildlife and their natural habitats. You can see how education and animal care are woven into every part of the experience here.
The zoo is open daily except on major holidays, giving you plenty of time to walk through different areas at your own pace. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water, especially during warmer months when Texas heat can be intense.
The grounds are home to over 300 animals spanning more than 100 different species, many of which were previously orphaned, injured, or abused. Walking through, you encounter creatures whose personal stories of rescue and recovery become part of the experience.
