Cueva del viento, Tourist attraction in volcanic cave at Icod de los Vinos, Tenerife, Spain.
Cueva del Viento is an underground volcanic tunnel system located in Icod de los Vinos, Tenerife, featuring multiple passages carved by ancient lava flows with distinctive geological formations. The caves display rough-textured walls and varied hollow spaces that reveal how molten rock once flowed and cooled underground.
The tunnel system was created around 27,000 years ago by lava flows from the Pico Viejo volcano near Mount Teide. Over time, this formation became evidence of the volcanic activity that shaped the geology of the Canary Islands.
Archaeologists discovered remains of Guanches, the original inhabitants of Tenerife, along with fossils of extinct animal species inside the cave.
Visitors receive helmets with headlamps and follow guides through dark passages in organized groups to safely explore the cave system. It is best to wear comfortable shoes and prepare for uneven floors and tight passages.
The cave contains fossils of extinct animals and remains of the Guanches, the original inhabitants of Tenerife, showing that people knew of these underground spaces for thousands of years. These archaeological finds suggest the cave held long-term significance for the island's early settlers.
