Plage du fort

Plage du fort, Sandy beach near Fort de Socoa in Ciboure, France

Plage du fort is a sandy beach nestled in a sheltered cove at the foot of Fort de Socoa, featuring fine sand and waters protected by a stone breakwater. The beach offers fresh water showers and wheelchair access facilities.

Fort de Socoa was built in the 17th century to defend the bay, which later led to the development of the beach as a protected swimming area. The fort and beach remain connected as a shared landmark today.

The small harbor beside the beach hosts fishermen who maintain traditional boats and keep maritime customs alive in this Basque coastal community.

Lifeguards watch over the beach during summer months, and the shoreline is easy to reach on foot from the town center. Facilities remain available throughout the year for visitors of all abilities.

The stone dike alongside the beach creates natural tidal pools at high tide, giving swimmers different water conditions and a separate experience. These pools reveal rocky formations and sea life when the tide pulls back.
