Tham Lod Cave, Limestone cave entrance in Mae Hong Son Province, Thailand
Tham Lod is a limestone cave in Mae Hong Son Province where the Nam Lang River flows through three connected chambers. The passages span more than 1,600 meters and form natural waterways throughout the cave system.
The cave served as a human settlement more than 2,000 years ago, as shown by archaeological finds of ancient teak coffins. These discoveries reveal that people have lived in and used this site since ancient times.
The bamboo raft journey along the Nam Lang River connects visitors to a long relationship between local people and the cave. Shan guides use traditional kerosene lanterns that have illuminated these passages for many years.
Plan to arrive early in the afternoon to complete a full tour before closing time in the late afternoon. Tours last about an hour and include both cave access and raft travel along the river.
The cave is home to large colonies of swifts and bats that emerge each evening in coordinated patterns from the northern entrance. Watching this natural display unfold at dusk is a memorable part of a visit here.
