Tham Lot

Tham Lot is an extensive cave system in Mae Hong Son Province carved by the Nam Lang River flowing through its passages. The cave contains multiple large chambers featuring striking limestone formations and natural columns throughout its interior.

Archaeological evidence shows Hoabinhian hunter tribes occupied the cave between 9000 and 5500 BC, leaving behind stone tools and plant matter. The site remained significant for different peoples across thousands of years.

The cave served as a burial ground for Lawa peoples, as shown by ancient wooden coffins found within the chambers. These artifacts reveal how communities honored their dead in this sacred space.

The cave can only be explored with experienced local guides who navigate bamboo rafts through the passages and use lanterns to light the way. Visitors should be prepared for wet conditions and darkness during the journey.

Every evening, thousands of swifts and bats exit the cave in dramatic waves that fill the sky. This natural spectacle occurs with remarkable regularity and offers an unforgettable sight.
