Alcaicería of Granada, Market in Granada, Spain

The Alcaicería is a market nestled in narrow lanes of Granada's old town with covered passages and shops filled with handcrafted goods. The maze of stone pavements and small trading chambers creates a winding shopping environment with different levels and passages throughout.

This trading district emerged during Nasrid rule and specialized in handling precious fabrics from across the Mediterranean region. A major fire in the mid-1800s destroyed much of the original buildings, though the structures were later partially reconstructed.

The name refers to the medieval silk exchange that once operated here, and sellers today offer handcrafted goods that echo those trading traditions. Walking through the narrow lanes, you see ceramics, woven fabrics, and metalwork that reflect skills passed down in the region.

The location sits near the town center and is easy to reach on foot, though the lanes are quite narrow and can get crowded during peak hours. You'll have a better experience visiting early in the morning or late afternoon when fewer people are around.

Many small chambers throughout the market were once secured with iron gates to protect goods and safeguard the trading space at night. These fortified rooms reveal how important security was in a historical commercial hub.
