Golf Club Thunersee, Golf course in Thun, Switzerland
Golf Club Thunersee is a nine-hole course stretching about 2120 meters across undulating terrain with water hazards positioned throughout the layout. The design incorporates the surrounding alpine peaks as a natural backdrop to the playing area.
The facility opened in 1998 as a result of collaboration between designer Jeff Howes and Golfdesign Ireland, establishing organized golf in the Thun area. This marked an important milestone in bringing a professional-standard course to the region.
The club serves as a gathering place for golfers in the region and has become part of the local sporting community over the decades. Its layout weaves together the sport with views of surrounding peaks, creating a connection between recreation and the natural landscape.
The facility offers 16 covered tee areas suitable for both right and left-handed golfers, plus practice greens and an 18-hole putting course with sand and water features. Players should prepare for changing elevation and wind conditions due to the mountain location.
A 2015 renovation modified eight holes with smaller sand bunkers and more complex green designs to increase technical difficulty. These changes made several holes noticeably more challenging compared to the original layout.

Golf courses in Switzerland offer many different experiences depending on where they are. Some are in the mountains, like in Davos where the altitude makes playing more difficult, while others run along the lakes or spread out in valleys. In Geneva, you will find greens that overlook the lake waters. The Golf Club Crans-sur-Sierre hosts regular high-level tournaments and attracts both amateur and professional golfers. In Andermatt in the Alps, the course was designed with the environment in mind. In Valais and Ticino, the courses enjoy milder conditions and Mediterranean-type plants. Each course has its own features. The weather plays an important role: at high elevation, you will play under mountain skies, while in Ticino, the sun and gentle air are more like the conditions in southern Europe. The courses let you see the variety of Swiss landscapes without stopping your love for golf. Whether it’s mountain fairways or greens near water, Swiss courses combine sport with natural beauty.
