Parc Ornithologique de Pont de Gau, Bird sanctuary in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, France
The Parc Ornithologique de Pont de Gau is a bird sanctuary in the Camargue wetlands, covering 60 hectares of marshes, reed beds, and water areas. The site provides natural habitats for more than 400 bird species that can be observed throughout the year.
The site was founded in 1949 by André Lamouroux as a zoological park. It transformed into a specialized bird sanctuary in 1974 under the direction of his son René.
The park takes its name from the Pont de Gau bridge nearby and serves as a refuge for people wanting to experience the birdlife of the Camargue region. Visitors can watch different bird species living and interacting in their natural habitats throughout the day.
Seven kilometers of trails crisscross the grounds, allowing observation from marked areas while protecting nesting zones. Visitors should bring binoculars and come in early morning or late afternoon when bird activity is highest.
The sanctuary operates a wildlife rehabilitation center that treats about 350 injured or orphaned native birds annually and returns them to the wild. This rescue work is a key part of daily operations and shows commitment to protecting the local population.
