Bac du Sauvage

Bac du Sauvage is a cable ferry that crosses the Petit Rhône river in the Camargue region of southern France. It carries vehicles and passengers between two roads on opposite banks of the waterway.

The ferry started operating in 1972 with a paddle wheel propulsion system that remains in use today. This original design has been maintained throughout its decades of service.

The ferry is a regular crossing point for horseback riding groups exploring the Camargue wetlands. You will often see riders and their horses gathering at the landing areas.

The ferry runs from early morning through the evening with schedules that change by season. Plan to arrive early during peak travel times to avoid waiting longer than necessary.

The ferry uses a rare combination of paddle wheel propulsion guided by cables, a system found on very few modern ferries. This mechanical approach blends older and newer technology in an uncommon way.
