Réserve naturelle régionale du Scamandre, Regional nature reserve in Vauvert, France
The Scamandre Regional Nature Reserve covers wetland areas with marshes, ponds, and extensive reed beds along a lagoon. The site features multiple pathways through these different habitats and several viewpoints for observing wildlife.
The area was once sheep grazing land before becoming a voluntary nature reserve in 1994. It gained official status as a regional nature reserve in 2006.
The visitor center occupies a converted sheep barn and displays exhibits about the local wildlife and wetland ecology. Visitors can explore the area's natural features through photographs, objects, and interpretive panels.
Multiple walking trails of varying lengths lead through different sections of the site, offering different experiences depending on your preferred route. Wearing sturdy footwear helps, and early hours are best for spotting wildlife.
The site holds one of Western Europe's largest reed bed areas with an exceptional variety of heron species. You can observe nearly every heron type found across the European continent in a single location.
